Korean food so far | 2010 EPIK Orientation

Josh and I already loved Korean food before we got here, and the more dishes we try, the more we like.

Below is my (quite large) breakfast from Saturday. Other than the roll, coffee, and a small piece of rye bread (with whipped cream on top!) hidden behind the bowl, it’s not very breakfast-y. Koreans tend to have rice, kimchi (the reddish stuff there, fermented cabbage) and soup for every meal. I’m working on it. There’s also salad with kiwi dressing and some yummy fried mandu (dumplings with meat and veggies inside) under the roll.

Here is my lunch from that same day. Some noodles in the soup this time and even more rice (in the wraps it’s mixed with a sweet bean curd, yum) Don’t worry, I did have kimchi, but it’s hidden behind the soup bowl.

Here are the first snacks I purchased in Korea, from the FamilyMart convenience store inside our dorm building. Those are cheesy (see the picture on the package?) rolls, and except for the cheese flavor, much like King’s Hawaiian rolls we get back home. Then that’s a latte drink (keopi uyu, or coffee milk) that I enjoyed as well. Both were about a dollar apiece.

Oh, Pepero. This is the first of 2 boxes of these I’ve already eaten while here. They’re like the Pocky that comes from Japan. My birthday, November 11, is actually a holiday here called Pepero Day where people give each other Pepero, because the day is 11-11, which looks like…Pepero! I’m really looking forward to this.

Not to be left out, Josh shows off his treats, some Bugle-ish snacks with a wonderful kick, and Sweetie Ade, one of the many sugary drinks they have here. He is obviously happy with his choices.

Finally, I wanted to mention the food item so many of us are loving this week, the squeezable jelly packets! Tasty and super convenient. Good job, Korea! We love your food!
